TIE Blog 2

Reflecting back on my VoiceThread lesson I was very pleased. To be honest this worked a lot better than I expected amy students and my participating teacher really enjoyed it. I took this lesson into two parts. I was able to integrate a social studies, Language, and technology lesson all into one. It was brilliant. What I loved most about this lesson was not only did the students get to work together and brainstorm ideas, but they were also able to share what they came up with and show everyone with the VoiceThread. They were all really proud of their work. What worked best for me was setting guidelines and rules before and after creating the VoiceThread with the students. This made the recording go more smoothly and it was less chaotic. It also limited the mistakes the students made. I feel that my Voicethread was really awesome and my lesson was done on a subject touching. This made the Voicethread even better. The students were learning about Slaves in 5th grade Social Studies. They had to do a TAKS packet that had a snippet from the Fugitive Story and then answer questions. I knew I had to make this TAKS packet more fun so I did. After reading the fugitive the students were able to dissect a song called Follow the Drinking Gourd. This had a hidden message for slaves. The students then created their own personal accounts as if they were the run away slaves. THe students really enjoyed the lesson and so did I and my participating teacher. If I did have to change anything it would be to give myself more time for this lesson. Even though it was done in two days, I think it could have been done more comfortably in three days. Also, when it came time for the students to talk about their illustrations it did not go very well. They lost their words and could not think on their feet. That was my fault. I should have had the students write what they wanted to say first and then read it for the VoiceThread. When the class saw the final product of the VoiceThread they were so proud of themselves. It was great to see their faces. They thought it was really neat, as did I. My teacher thought so as well. She wanted me to save the VoiceTHread on her computer to use at a later time. She also had me show her how to do a VoiceThread because she wanted to use one next time she had a lesson she could use with it.

TIE Lesson Idea

After speaking to my CT I am realizing that integrating technology in the classroom is going to be hard for me because she does not want to try anything new. My strategy is to try and show her how cool it would be to try and change her mind. We are reading the Narnia series in my 5th grade classroom. I am looking to do some kind of Readers Theatre with my voice thread. I am also thinking about having the students predict new endings to the chapters they are reding and then posting them on the walls and letting them narrate them for the Voice Thread.

I am starting to pull some ideas together for my Lesson. I am thinking about doing my Lesson on the 8th of November. By the time I am teaching this lesson with the VT my 5th grade students will have finished 2 of the Narnia books. I am still leaning towards the idea of having the students create new endings. For instance, in the "new world" of Narnia there are so many different mystical characters. I am going to ask my students waht would have happened if...Peter want to the witches castle instead of the Half Horse Half mans Shack? The students will then be able to make up new endings with different endings. In a way making the story their own. I really want my students to use this VT as a Readers Theatre and I would love for the students to dress up. I am going to try and convince my CT that this needs to happen.

6-2 Creating our own Voicethread

Texas Revolution VT

Incorporating Voice Threads in the Classroom WS Activity 1.3

Have you ever heard of Voice threads? Me either, until today! Voice threads are videos or clips that include sound. They can be used for almost anything! The voice thread I chose focuses on Poetry in the classroom. Follow this link to browse the many different voice threads you can view voicethread.com.

This voice thread is from an Elementary School classroom that observed their day to day weather and then created poetry from their observations. Along with the poetry they also created pictures. As you go through the slides they are narrated. The students can hear what they wrote. I think this is such a great tool for the reading classroom or really any classroom. These voice threads can be used for reader's theater. The students can create their own story and illustrate it or they can use a story that is provided and act out while they are reading. Their voices can be recorded and then they can hear themselves. I think this is a great way for students to share their work.

Technology Integration in the Classroom

I have looked at the google tools provided and I think they look awesome. I also think that they would be very beneficial in the classroom. I already use google docs frequently in my college classes. I think having a classroom blog would be beneficial for students to be able to ask each other questions and use each other for help.
